About VIT Vellore (Vellore Institute of Technology)

VIT  Vellore (Vellore Institute of Technology) is a deemed-to-be university located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. It was founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College and was granted deemed-university status by the UGC in 2001, after which it adopted its current name.

Today, VIT operates across four campuses — Vellore, Chennai, Bhopal, and Amaravati (AP) — and together they run 71 undergraduate, 58 postgraduate, 15 integrated, and multiple doctoral and research programmes. The Vellore campus is the founding and largest campus, spread over roughly 372 acres, and is best known for its engineering programmes, admitted through VIT’s own entrance exam, VITEEE, rather than JEE Main or a state CET.

VIT Vellore holds a NAAC A++ accreditation with a CGPA of 3.66 out of 4, and it has featured in the NIRF Top 20 university list every year since 2016. In the NIRF 2025 rankings, VIT was placed 21st overall, 16th in Engineering, and 14th in both the University and Research categories nationally.

Admission

Admission into VIT Vellore's BTech programmes runs entirely through VITEEE (VIT Engineering Entrance Examination), a computer-based test that VIT designs and conducts itself rather than accepting JEE Main or a state CET score for its core BTech intake. After VITEEE results are declared, candidates go through an online counselling process where they choose their preferred branch and campus; their final VITEEE rank decides both the branch they get and the fee category (Category 1 to 5) they're placed into.

Non-engineering undergraduate programmes — BBA, B.Com, BCA, and the various B.Sc courses — admit primarily on Class 12 academic merit, followed by document verification and counselling.

The MBA at VIT Business School has its own process: candidates need a valid VITBEE, CAT, XAT, or MAT score, and shortlisted candidates go through a personal interview before final selection; relevant work experience counts as an added advantage.

Applications for the 2026-27 academic year are open at viteee.vit.ac.in for BTech, and through the respective school pages for management and science programmes.

Why Choose VIT Vellore

VIT Vellore pairs a NAAC A++ accreditation with a NIRF Engineering rank of 16 (2025) and a Fully Flexible Credit System that lets students shape a meaningful share of their own curriculum every semester, rather than following one fixed timetable for four years.

Its placement network is genuinely large: over 700 companies visited VIT's four campuses combined in the most recent full placement cycle, and recruiters have included Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Goldman Sachs. For students focused on Computer Science specifically, branch-level averages ( 8.13 LPA for the 2025 CSE batch) consistently run ahead of the college-wide figure.

Beyond placements, VIT Vellore runs research centres across most of its schools, holds a QS World Subject Ranking band for Computer Science & IT (#110) and Data Science & Al (#51-100), and offers international collaborative degree options such as the BBA (Financial Analytics) 2+2 programme with Binghamton University in the US.

For a student or parent comparing this against a smaller regional private college, the trade-off is straightforward: VIT Vellore costs more at the higher fee categories, but it backs that cost with a larger recruiter base, a nationally ranked research profile, and an accreditation record most regional private colleges can't match.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

VIT Vellore's primary scholarship route for BTech students is a rank-based tuition waiver tied directly to your VITEEE rank:

VITEEE Rank 1–10: 100% tuition fee waiver for all 4 years.
VITEEE Rank 11–50: 75% tuition fee waiver for all 4 years.
VITEEE Rank 51–100: 50% tuition fee waiver for all 4 years.
VITEEE Rank 101–500: 25% tuition fee waiver for all 4 years.

For MBA applicants, VIT Business School runs a separate, exam-score-based waiver: a CAT or XAT score at the 95th percentile or above earns a full tuition waiver, while a 90th-percentile score earns 50% off; MAT scores of 791-800 and 760-790 earn the same two tiers respectively.

VIT also offers a Chancellor's Special Award a cash award plus certificate for the best all-round outgoing student in select programme categories, along with separate sports scholarships and need-based financial assistance for economically weaker students, including a ₹10,000 GVSD Programme scholarship for students from the Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai districts who completed their Class 12 locally.

Applications are invited for the upcoming session. Scholarships are available for meritorious students.
