Overview
Quick answer: XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is a national-level MBA/PGDM entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of XAMI (Xavier Association of Management Institutes) every January. Its scores are accepted by 250+ B-schools including XLRI, XIM University, SPJIMR, IMT Ghaziabad, MICA, IMI Delhi, TAPMI, and GIM. XAT 2027 will be held on Sunday, January 3, 2027 (2:00 pm – 5:00 pm) as a computer-based test across 100+ Indian cities. XAT carries a legacy of 75+ years — XLRI has conducted it at the all-India level longer than any other management entrance test in the country. What makes it genuinely different from CAT and other MBA exams is its Decision Making section: a XAT-exclusive section that tests managerial judgment through business and ethical dilemma caselets, with no direct equivalent in any other Indian entrance exam.
Strategically, XAT sits one month after CAT (held in November), which makes it the natural second attempt for serious MBA aspirants: the syllabus overlaps almost entirely with CAT preparation (except Decision Making), and the January date gives an extra month to prepare. Eligibility
Final-year candidates: Eligible — students expecting to complete their degree by June 2027 can apply for XAT 2027.
Age limit: None.
Work experience: Not required for XAT or for XLRI's flagship BM/HRM programmes. The Executive PGDM (GM) programme is the exception — it requires a minimum of 3 years of managerial/supervisory experience.
NRI/Foreign/PIO/OCI candidates: May apply through a valid GMAT score for all XLRI programmes (or take XAT).
Number of attempts: No restriction — candidates can take XAT any number of times.

Syllabus
- Verbal & Logical Ability (26 Qs) — Reading comprehension (including poems and abstract passages, a XAT signature), critical reasoning, para jumbles, para completion, vocabulary-in-context, analogies, and verbal logic.
- Decision Making (21 Qs) — XAT-exclusive: business caselets involving ethical dilemmas, managerial trade-offs, HR situations, and data-based decisions. Tests judgment, not knowledge — requires dedicated practice with past XAT papers since no other exam covers it.
- Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (28 Qs) — Arithmetic, algebra, geometry and mensuration, number systems, probability and P&C, functions, plus DI sets (tables, charts, caselets) and data sufficiency.
- General Knowledge (20 Qs) — Static GK (history, geography, awards, books, science) and current affairs (national/international events, business and economy, sports, appointments) from roughly the 12 months before the exam.
How to Apply
2. Fill the application form — personal details, academic record, work experience (if any), and your choice of test cities.
3. Select programmes — choose the XLRI programmes (₹200 extra each) and XAMI/associate institutes you want your score sent to. You can also apply to most XAT-accepting colleges separately after the result using your scorecard.
4. Upload documents — recent passport-size photograph and signature in the specified format/size.
5. Pay ₹2,300 online (plus programme fees, if any) via UPI, net banking, or card, then submit and download the confirmation page. Keep the XAT ID safe — it's needed for the admit card, result, and institute applications.
Preparation Tips
- Piggyback on CAT prep, then add Decision Making. ~80% of the XAT syllabus overlaps with CAT. The month between CAT (November) and XAT (January) is enough to layer on the two XAT-specific elements: Decision Making and GK.
- Treat Decision Making as a separate subject. Solve at least the last 10 years of XAT DM sets — patterns in ethical-dilemma questions repeat. This section alone is ~22% of your scored questions and is the most common reason CAT-toppers underperform in XAT.
- Respect the unattempted-question penalty. Build mock strategy around leaving no more than 8 questions blank — practise intelligent guessing on 50-50 questions rather than mass skipping.
- Expect harder RC than CAT. XAT regularly uses philosophical passages and poems; practise abstract RC specifically.
- Do 15–20 full-length XAT mocks with the 170+10 minute structure, and review percentile-versus-attempts data after each — XAT rewards accuracy over volume (a raw score of ~35/75 in Part 1 has historically translated to 98–99 percentile).
- For GK, revise the last 12 months of current affairs plus static GK basics in the final month — it doesn't affect your percentile, but it matters at the XLRI interview stage.
Marking scheme (this is where XAT differs sharply from every other MBA exam):
+1 mark for every correct answer.
−0.25 marks for every wrong answer in Part 1.
−0.10 marks for every unattempted question beyond 8 unattempted questions in Part 1 — XAT penalises excessive skipping, so a pure "attempt only sure shots" strategy backfires.
No negative marking in the GK section.
The essay is no longer part of the test — it was moved to the interview (GD/PI) stage in the recent pattern overhaul that also cut the paper to 95 questions.

The honest trade-offs: XAT's ₹2,300 fee is the highest among Indian MBA entrance exams; its verbal section is measurably tougher than CAT's; the unattempted-question penalty punishes over-cautious test takers; and outside the top ~15 XAT schools, seat quality drops faster than in the CAT ecosystem. The rational strategy for most aspirants is CAT + XAT together, not either alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply for XAT 2027?
Anyone with a recognised 3-year bachelor's degree in any discipline — with no minimum marks, no age limit, and no work-experience requirement. Final-year students completing their degree by June 2027 can also apply.
Is there negative marking in XAT?
Yes — and it's unusual. Wrong answers in Part 1 cost −0.25 marks, and XAT also deducts −0.10 marks for every unattempted question beyond 8 in Part 1. The General Knowledge section has no negative marking.
Is the GK section counted in the XAT percentile?
No. Your XAT percentile is calculated only on Part 1 (Decision Making, Verbal & Logical Ability, and Quantitative Ability & DI). GK marks are used separately by XLRI at the interview stage.
How many attempts are allowed in XAT?
There is no limit — you can appear for XAT every year, and there is no age cap.
What percentile do I need for XLRI and other top colleges?
XLRI's BM/HRM programmes typically shortlist at 95–96+ percentile; XIM University at ~91–92; IMT Ghaziabad, MICA, and IMI Delhi at ~90–91; TAPMI at ~80–85; and many good schools accept 70–90 percentile. Roughly, a raw score of 32+ in Part 1 has recently mapped to the 95+ percentile band.
When will the XAT 2027 result be declared?

Is XAT harder than CAT?
Differently hard. XAT's verbal section and Decision Making caselets are tougher and more abstract than CAT's, but its quant section is usually slightly gentler. The syllabus overlap means CAT preparation covers most of XAT — the Decision Making section is the only genuinely new preparation load.
